When doing research about a book that I am working on on the topic of success, I find that all of the successful people that I have studied have a routine. A routine is the manifestation of a life of planning. It is literally defined as a series of actions regularly followed. This means that the actions that are taken are not accidental. They are planned and thought out. World renowned investor and one of the wealthiest men in the world, Warren Buffett begins his morning at 6:45am, he then reads the Wall Street Journal, Forbes and USA Today. He then eats breakfast at McDonalds (one of the companies that he has invested heavily in) and has three designated amounts that he spends depending on how the stock market is performing that day. He then reads 80% of his day.

Another successful figure is media mogul and influencer Oprah Winfrey. Oprah wakes up at 7:10 each morning. She brushes her teeth and walks her 5 dogs. She then pulls five cards from her 365 Gathered Truths box while sipping her favorite espresso. She meditates , then works out for an hour. She has lunch in her garden as often as possible with her longtime partner Stedman Graham. A recent lunch included crab cakes flown in from Pappas in Baltimore. She says that she tries to take care of all business in the early afternoon, personally signing all checks over $100,000. After all business is done, she works out again, eats dinner and prefers to spend the evening reading a good book while sipping herbal tea.

These two examples showcase two very different routines that work perfectly for two very different types of successful people. However, the common thread is that there is a routine. They happen to the day instead of allowing the day to happen to them. What will your daily routine be? What are the habits that you will adopt daily in order to ensure that you reach the goals that you have set for yourself? Will spending hours on social media be the key to helping you to realize your dreams? Will picking McDonalds up on the way to your next meeting get you the fitness gains that you’ve been seeking? If not, then I encourage you to build the routines that will!!!
